Legalization of assisted suicide in Slovenia
On July 18, 2025, Slovenia joined the small number of countries that allow assisted suicide.
The text of the law adopted by the Slovenian Parliament provides for the possibility of assisted suicide for:
- patients with the capacity to consent
- whose suffering is deemed unbearable
- suffering from an incurable disease or other serious and permanent health impairment
- whose treatment is no longer effective and who have no reasonable hope of recovery or improvement in their health
Cases of suffering resulting from mental illness are excluded from the scope of the law.
The legalization of assisted suicide in Slovenia follows on from the referendum held in the country in 2024, in which 55% of voters were in favor of legalizing the practice.
